Just Transition and the place of Labour Position Paper
Our latest position paper delves into the urgent need for a just transition from a fossil fuel-dependent economy to a greener, more sustainable model. As climate change accelerates, it exacerbates existing inequalities and threatens the very fabric of our societies. The transition to a green economy requires rapid and far-reaching changes across various sectors, including energy, agriculture, industry, and transportation. However, this transformation poses significant challenges for the world of work, livelihoods, and community life. By examining the interconnectedness between the world of work and communities, we gain insight into the profound impact and challenges of this transition.
The philosophy of our paper is rooted in the recognition that the climate crisis is symptomatic of a larger systemic failure driven by profit-driven capitalism. We advocate for a human-centered approach to production and consumption, one that prioritizes socio-ecological justice over profit maximization.
By challenging traditional notions of development and economic growth, we aim to redefine the relationship between humanity and the environment, integrating socio-economic and political rights into our development framework. It is imperative that the fight against climate change aligns with the principles of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, with a focus on transformative social systems that ensure a decent life, social justice, and poverty reduction for all.
